- Review:
- The conclusion of every fashion week leaves me with a case of Stockholm Syndrome. Toward the end, sleep and full plates of wholesome not decorative food are the only luxuries that seem worth coveting. Yet it is so easy to absorb the manic pace that some separation anxiety is inevitable. For me, this season's shift back to reality will be even more grueling since I'm taking back to the Don't Shoot the Messengers' showroom the item which became my fashion week equivalent to a child's cherished doll or security blanket. Designers Jen Gilpin and Kyle Callanan are two of my dearest friends in Berlin. They are also, in the abstract, among the two most intimate people in my daily life because I'm almost never without an item their hands have made. I feel disconcerted and undressed without the leather jacket they made me a year ago. The massive, multi-faceted, black leather bag they built has become my only piece of luggage - a daily-carry all that is practically an appendage. I know that my attachment to this tote is partially the result of its ability to carry all my vital earthly possessions in one elegant piece.
- Extended Review:
- Yet I now have the same intense attachment to the foot-long leather clutch they lent me for Fashion Week. The bag is made from their signature subtle but thick black leather. It is a simple yet flexible form with the most captivating clasp. Instead of a traditional catch, they've fashioned a vintage dresser handle into a gorgeous, gold, clasp. The handle is shaped a little like the skeleton of a shark's open mouth. My middle two fingers slide into its hold and my outside digits wrap easily around the metal base, which gives me a supremely comfortable and comforting grip on the clutch. With my fingers securely under the gold bar where one would pull open a drawer, it looks like a high-end set of brass knuckles or Jules Kim's conceptual jewelry. And the feeling of the leather base in my palm is so firm that I doubt I'll entrust my valuables to another purse again.
- Ranking:
- Giving up this clutch will be brutally hard. Only because I truly love Jen and Kyle will they be able to pry it from my hand….
