- Review:
- Since I temporarily returned to Oxford University to finally finish my long-suffering PhD, my feet have almost always slipped into snow-boots or ragged flats to trudge between my dorm-room and the library. I have a single pair of chewed-up black heels for formal occasions but practical concerns usually dictate my scholastic wardrobe. Oxford is majestic but hardly glamorous. Amid the legions of drunken undergraduates careening by on the cobblestones every night, I feel that Oxford’s pedestrian stress and rainy drizzle make heels impossible for me. Which is why I was so thrilled at the prospect of testing Kaviar Gauche’s cream colored stilettos during my nerdy student routine. I have yet to see the movie “Black Swan.” But I feel as if I have lived it after a weekend wearing Kaviar Gauche’s “Gaiter Evelet Heels.” The blend of toxic sex, psychic break-down and thrilling beauty in Black Swan’s haunting trailer are all perfectly condensed into these magnificent shoes. The ribbons evoke prima ballerina’s toe-shoes while the heel is ominously lethal and practically pornographic. The layers of buttery leather that caress my calf when they are laced up create a surprising degree of real support and the shoes’ base is brilliantly molded to my feet. And so, since wearing shoes this lovely around Oxford is already such a surreal prospect, I decided to push the experience to its satirical extreme with an elaborate photo shoot.
